Note: following few highlights from the past few weeks ‘the digest’ was on break show how the U.S. imperialist fascist fantasy of ‘owning’ the world by terror and slaughter is creating exactly what its bogus “war on terror” is designed to eradicate: irresistible forces of national liberation.

Truth About Iraqis
…We are Iraqis. And we will fight. We will win. Because ours is a righteous battle. We did not invade the USA. We did not rape its men and women. We did not break into your homes in the dead of night. We did not cause the death and destruction on 9/11. So many of us Iraqis were horrified on that day. For your pain, and for our pain which we knew would come. We did not ask you to “liberate” us. We asked for none of the things that have transpired…. YOU, the American taxpayer, celebrate lies. YOU celebrate deceit. YOU celebrate false heroes and worship a God of War….

ERASING IRAQ’S HISTORY
Felicity Arbuthnot
Who is erasing Iraq’s history? A visitor only has to be in the country minute’s before someone informs them: ‘We are the cradle of civilisation’ and launches in to the pride and passion of historical jewels and archeological wonders stetching back seemingly beyond time. They are not Sunni, Shia, Christian, Turkoman, Yazidi jewels, they are Mesapotamia’s and have been proudly nurtured since the mists of time. Samarra’s great golden domes, destroyed on 22nd February last year, a Shia shrine in a largely Sunni city, had been tended and protected by residents for centuries. The southern holy cities of Najav and Kerbala were places where Iraqis of all or no religion, demanded to take visitors. Before the invasion it was unthinkable to even wonder whether a host, driver, shopkeeper was of a particular religion, sect. They were Iraqis, intermarried, living mostly side by side. From the day all Iraq was reduced to an intensive care unit (9th April 2003) ‘mission accomplished’, patient critical, suddenly there were ‘Sunni’.'Shia’, ‘tribes’,in the US and UK lexicon…
Before the invasion, suicide bombings were unheard of in Iraq. The 1990’s had some car bombs in Baghdad, which bewildered Iraqis and it would seem were generated by former US darling Iyad Allawi’s Iraq National Accord. American spokespersons have a mantra: ‘Al Qaeda’. But there was no Al Qaeda (anyway a CIA creation) in Iraq before the invasion. Has the most powerful army on earth no ability to control Iraq’s borders? Saddam Hussein never had a problem. Anyway, the US military itself has stated that only a minimal percentage of attacks are by foreign fighters and Iraqis have lived together for centuries. When a friend - and many others - said, just prior to the invasion: ‘Let them come, we have been fighting invaders for centuries’, she was talking about just that. Not Iraqis fighting Iraqis.Read the full article / Leggi l’articolo completo:http://www.uruknet.de/?p=32133
The Great Iraq Oil Robbery
Alan Maass, Just
The cabinet of the new Iraqi government–under pressure from the U.S. occupiers who put them in power–approved a law that would undo Iraq’s nationalized system and give Western oil giants unparalleled access to the country’s vast reserves. The oil companies would be guaranteed super-profits–on a scale unknown anywhere else in the Middle East–for a period of 20 to 35 years from oil pumped out of two-thirds or more of Iraq’s oilfields. Meanwhile, Iraqis would continue to endure poverty and the devastation of war while sitting atop what is estimated to be the third-largest supply of the world’s most sought-after resource. The great Iraq oil robbery isn’t a done deal..

Flow Charter: ‘Anti-War’ Democrats Give Bush Victory on a Platter
Chris Floyd, Empire Burlesque

…America’s imperial right to secure the lion’s share of the world’s resources – by any means necessary – has long been a basic, bipartisan assumption of U.S. foreign policy for decades. After all, was it not the saintly Jimmy Carter who first openly declared that America would go to war in the Middle East if “our” oil supplies there were threatened? …
A secret NSC memorandum in 2001 spoke candidly of “actions regarding the capture of new and existing oil and gas fields” in Iraq. In 2002 Paul Wolfowitz suggested simply seizing the oil fields. These words and suggestions were draconian, overt, and reprehensible-morally, historically, politically and diplomatically. The seizure of the oil would have to be oblique and far more sophisticated…. A year before the war the State Department undertook the “Future of Iraq” project, expressly to design the institutional contours of the postwar country. The Oil and Energy Working Group” looked with dismay at the National Iraqi Oil Company, the government agency that owned and operated the Iraqi oil fields and marketed the products. 100% of the revenues went directly to the central government, and constituted about 90% of its income…. The Oil and Energy Working Group designed a scheme that was oblique and sophisticated, indeed. The oil seizure would be less than total. It would be obscured in complexity. The apparent responsibility for it would be shifted, and it would be disguised as benefiting, even necessary to Iraq’s well being….
The plan would keep the National Iraqi Oil Company in place, to continue overseeing the currently producing fields. But those fields represent only 19% of Iraq’s petroleum reserves. The other 81% would be flung open to “investment” by foreign oil interests, and the companies in favored positions today-because of the war and their political connections-are Exxon/Mobil, Chevron/Texaco, BP/Amoco, and Royal Dutch/Shell… The nationalized industry would be 80% privatized…
The features of the State Department plan were inserted by Paul Bremer’s Provisional Coalition Authority into the developing structures of Iraqi governance. American oil companies were omnipresent in Baghdad then and have been since, shaping and shepherding the plan through the several iterations of puppet governments-the “democracy” said to be taking hold in Iraq.
The package today is in the form of draft legislation, the hydrocarbon law. Only a handful of Iraqi officials know its details. Virtually none of them had a hand in its construction. (It was first written in English.) And its exclusive beneficiaries are the American and British oil companies, whose profits will come directly from the pockets of the Iraqi people….This is what more than 600,000 innocent Iraqis have been murdered for. This, and only this: the vast profits that flow from oil, and the strategic and political power that comes from controlling that flow.
NUKE ‘EM TIL THEY GLOW
Malcom Lagauche
In the buildup to Desert Storm, many bumper stickers in the U.S. proclaimed, “Nuke ‘Em Till They Glow.” In reality, there was some truth in the statement because the U.S. left hundreds of tons of spent uranium in Iraq. This material is very hard and was used in missiles, rockets and bombs. The leftover residue has contaminated much of Iraq and incidences of malformed babies skyrocketed after the conflict. The U.S. again pummeled Iraq with spent uranium in its 2003 invasion of Iraq. But, did the U.S. actually detonate a nuclear weapon during the conflict? Former U.S. Army Captain Eric May came to this conclusion after closely studying the Battle of Baghdad at the international airport. In an interview published on August 25, 2006, he told me:(…) A couple of journalists who were in Baghdad proper talked to the people returning from the battle. The most extreme thing I picked up is that the Battle of Baghdad was started at the airport with the U.S. forces being overwhelmed. It would end up being a six-hour firefight at close quarters and my surmise is that our side was running out of ammo and somebody decided to go nuclear. That seems to be universally acknowledged by everybody on all sides, except the American. (…) Recently, another source made the same allegations. Saifeddin Hassan Taha al-Rawi, former commander of Iraq’s Republican Guard, was interviewed by Al-Jazeera News about the battle….

Encouraging Ethnic Chauvinism: Kirkuk, Oil and the Kurds
LAITH al-SAUD, CounterPunch
http://www.uruknet.de/?s1=1&p=32100&s2=14
Before the end of this year, the residents of the city of Kirkuk (about 250 KM north of Baghdad) will partake in a referendum to choose their fate. At issue is whether the oil rich city will be annexed as part of so-called Kurdistan. The history of Kirkuk is emblematic of the greater history of Iraq: It is a city that has always been prone to invasion, has always been seen as a strategic point of defense against rival empires, is ethnically and religiously very mixed and, of course, has been both cursed and blessed by its enormous oil supply. In conforming to this narrative Kirkuk has once again become the focal point of strategic concerns and the current puppet regime in Iraq has agreed to “relocate” Arabs, by removing them from their homes, and “re-settle” Kurds in their place. Taking this action just before the referendum almost insures annexation and de facto Kurdish separation from the rest of Iraq.
Kirkuk is a city of splendid diversity-a diversity that is systematically being wiped out…Since the 2003 invasion of the country myth has taken precedence over history and Kurdish politicians have adopted the methods of that other myth-based nation-state in the region-Israel, to establish claims on the oil reach city. During the invasion, Kurdish peshmerga (militias) entered Kirkuk and established de facto control of the city. Since then, as has been reported by the Center for Research on Globalization, Kurdish militias have forcibly evicted people from their homes, engaged in murder, assassination and a slow ethnic cleansing. The first victims in this regard have been the Arabs….
Israeli intelligence officials have been working closely with Kurdish leader and have established a strong foothold in the area. This development raises some serious issues about so-called Kurdistan acting as a staging point for Israeli operations in the rest of the country… Kirkuk is now being called the “Jerusalem of the Kurds.”…
Since the invasion, the United States encouraged ethnic chauvinism and consistently hinted at dividing the country up into ethnic or sectarian sections. Should this policy continue, Kurdistan will become a small fascist state with a lot of oil, that will be busy oppressing its large, very large, minority population and begging the US for bases to “protect” it from its neighbours, who are “different.” And, of course, the US will gladly oblige, just as it does in the Gulf States because, after all, that is where the oil is.
“Suicide Bombings” - The Cover Story For US Military Ops In Iraq
Joe Quinn Signs of the Timeshttp://www.signs-of-the-times.org/articles/show/130203-%22Suicide+Bombings%22+-+The+Cover+Story+For+US+Military+Ops+In+Iraq
Al-sarafiya bridge which, until two days ago, spanned the Tigris in Baghdad, linking Shia and Sunni neighborhoods of the city.
“Suicide bombings” are a daily occurrence in Iraq, and are the major propaganda tool used by the US government and its mainstream media to convince the world that there is still some “freedom and Democracy” work to be done by US troops in Iraq. But what if they are a cover for something else?…
The Tigris river now serves as a de facto dividing line between the mostly Shiite east and the largely Sunni west of the city, with the bridges the only connection between them. It’s called “counter insurgency strategy” - divide and conquer.
The reports that a “truck suicide bomb” had been detonated on the bridge came from the US military. No independent Iraqi or other source was able to verify this claim. In fact, AP Television News video showed the bridge broken in two places suggesting two blasts.
Other Iraqi eyewitnesses claim that a US attack helicopter fired two missiles at the bridge, but with the mainstream media parroting only the official US military line that it was “suicide truck bomb” these eyewitness reports are never heard… Robert Fisk recently commented on the US military plan for “gated communities” in Baghdad:
Faced with an ever-more ruthless [SIC] insurgency in Baghdad - despite President George Bush’s “surge” in troops - US forces in the city are now planning a massive and highly controversial counter-insurgency operation that will seal off vast areas of the city, enclosing whole neighbourhoods with barricades and allowing only Iraqis with newly issued ID cards to enter. The campaign of “gated communities” - whose genesis was in the Vietnam War - will involve up to 30 of the city’s 89 official districts and will be the most ambitious counter-insurgency programme yet mounted by the US in Iraq….The system of “gating” areas under foreign occupation failed during the French war against FLN insurgents in Algeria and again during the American war in Vietnam. Israel has employed similar practices during its occupation of Palestinian territory - again, with little success.
But the campaign has far wider military ambitions than the pacification of Baghdad. It now appears that the US military intends to place as many as five mechanised brigades - comprising about 40,000 men - south and east of Baghdad, at least three of them positioned between the capital and the Iranian border. This would present Iran with a powerful - and potentially aggressive - American military force close to its border in the event of a US or Israeli military strike against its nuclear facilities later this year.
The latest “security” plan, of which The Independent has learnt the details, was concocted by General David Petraeus, the current US commander in Baghdad, during a six-month command and staff course at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. Those attending the course - American army generals serving in Iraq and top officers from the US Marine Corps, along with, according to some reports, at least four senior Israeli officers - participated in a series of debates to determine how best to “turn round” the disastrous war in Iraq.
So far, the Baghdad campaign has involved only the creation of a few US positions within several civilian areas of the city but the new project will involve joint American and Iraqi “support bases” in nine of the 30 districts to be “gated” off. From these bases - in fortified buildings - US-Iraqi forces will supposedly clear militias from civilian streets which will then be walled off and the occupants issued with ID cards. Only the occupants will be allowed into these “gated communities” and there will be continuous patrolling by US-Iraqi forces. There are likely to be pass systems, “visitor” registration and restrictions on movement outside the “gated communities”. Civilians may find themselves inside a “controlled population” prison.
The senior generals who constructed the new “security” plan for Baghdad were largely responsible for the seminal - but officially “restricted” - field manual on counter-insurgency produced by the Department of the Army in December of last year, code-numbered FM 3-24. While not specifically advocating the “gated communities” campaign, one of its principles is the unification of civilian and military activities, citing “civil operations and revolutionary development support teams” in South Vietnam, assistance to Kurdish refugees in northern Iraq in 1991 and the “provincial reconstruction teams” in Afghanistan - a project widely condemned for linking military co-operation and humanitarian aid.
FM 3-24 is harsh in its analysis of what counter-insurgency forces must do to eliminate violence [i.e. Iraqi resistance] In Iraq. “With good intelligence,” it says, “counter-insurgents are like surgeons cutting out cancerous tissue while keeping other vital organs intact.” But another former senior US officer has produced his own pessimistic conclusions about the “gated” neighbourhood project.
“Once the additional troops are in place the insurrectionists will cut the lines of communication from Kuwait to the greatest extent they are able,” he told The Independent. “They will do the same inside Baghdad, forcing more use of helicopters. The helicopters will be vulnerable coming into the patrol bases, and the enemy will destroy as many as they can. The second part of their plan will be to attempt to destroy one of the patrol bases. They will begin that process by utilising their people inside the ‘gated communities’ to help them enter. They will choose bases where the Iraqi troops either will not fight or will actually support them.
“The American reaction will be to use massive firepower, which will destroy the neighbourhood that is being ‘protected’.”
… the Iraqi people…are not fighting “terrorists”… like occupied peoples throughout history, will never stop resisting illegal and brutal occupation of their land.
Blaming the Victims: Covering Up Terrorism in Iraq
Ghali Hassan
A recent cover story in Time magazine (March, 2007, Europe and Asia) by Bobby Ghosh, “Why They Hate Each Other”, aimed at removing the Occupation as the generator of violence against the Iraqi people, and portrays the violence as “Iraqis killing Iraqis”. This media distortion obfuscates the U.S. monopoly on terrorism and allows the U.S. to use Iraq as a laboratory for terror at the expense of the Iraqi people.
Nowhere in his story does Ghosh tell the readers that the militias and the criminals were the creation of the Occupation and that the violence is the only pretext left to justify the ongoing Occupation. Why Iraqis didn’t “hate each other” before the illegal invasion of their country is totally ignored by Western media and remains a mystery to most Westerners. It is important to remember that Time was the leading propaganda organ which promoted the illegal aggression against Iraq, and continues to play a vicious role spreading Islamaphobia around the world.
To get a clearer picture of what has been done to Iraq and to Iraqi society, it is vital to connect the nearly two- decades of Anglo-American violence against the Iraqi people. Violence has been the primary tool of U.S. foreign policy and its dealing with smaller defenceless nations. Indeed, history has shown that all nations who qualified for U.S. violence were defenceless nations inhabited by coloured, or nonwhite human beings….
Thanks to a campaign of distortion generated by the media, the U.S. is succeeding brilliantly in convincing the world that the violence in Iraq is “sectarian” and that the U.S. is simply acting as a “saviour” protecting the Iraqi people. Hence, the U.S. will end the Occupation when the puppet government is able to provide security. It follows that the U.S. will decide on security and withdrawal when the U.S. sees fit. The longer the violence continues, the Occupation will continue….http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=HAS20070317&articleId=5093
IRAN
commentary:
Gamila Zahran has taken a courageous lead in exposing and opposing, on principle, without naming names, the reactionary, counter-revolutionary narrow nationalist trend attempting to equate Iran with the U.S. as major enemies of humanity and Arabs in particular — a position which is absolutely false and serves only the actual major enemy of all the peoples of the world, U.S. zionist imperialism. Here are Zahran’s truthful, beautiful words which need to be heeded and also spread widely by all who genuinely stand for anti-imperialist-zionist liberation:
My call that I keep trying to voice is basically to stress first and foremost on the following:
- NEVER to equate the two, i.e. neither the Iranian regime with the American nor the Iranian people’s collective culture/history/track record with the overwhelming majority of ‘white’ America’s collective culture or history/track record…the difference is immense…
- As people who declare ourselves to be on the side of the masses of the poor and oppressed (who happened to be overwhelmingly in the ‘third world’) and not elites our stand should be a UNIFYING stand and not divisive. It should be with the Iranian people like it was and still is with the Iraqi people and
like it should be with any ‘third world’ poor oppressed peoples/masses against any aggression from the racist western capitalistic - imperialistic cannibalistic genocidal collective culture spearheaded by America…
- There are HIDDEN HANDS working relentlessly 24/7 with immense resources and ‘techniques’ that are behind ALL the divisiveness in Iraq and between Iraq and Iran and that are behind ALL the carnage in Iraq. They use all sorts of tactics (to mention just one such tactic– death squads with local faces be them Arabic, Kurdish, Iranian, etc. all for the purpose of divide and conquer as well as actual slaughter of ALL opponents)…and now that Iran the PEOPLE/the NATION/the CULTURE/the RESOURCES is targeted they have been working hard on all fronts (in the killing fields in Iraq as well as in the propaganda machine in the ‘free’ western media) to make it seem as if Iran is responsible for all the carnage so that Iran (in the final analysis the Iranian people) find themselves standing alone deprived from any solidarity from the poor and oppressed masses of Arabs…
…the racist Anglo-American-Zionists in their unique genocidal brand of Imperialism are not targeting (just) governments and elites but are targeting entire nations, entire populations, entire cultures, for carnage, destruction and looting. In other words, if it was wrong for some to use the sorry excuse that Saddam’s ‘atrocities’ justified an attack by the Americans on Iraq and the Iraqi people under the guise of liberating the Iraqi people and the region from such a ‘corrupt’ and ‘brutal’ ‘Bathist’ elite, and it was, it is wrong now to justify an attack on Iran and the Iranian people under the guise that Iran’s ‘Magoosi’ government- is a traitor/corrupt elite.
An attack on Iran from the same powers that attacked Iraq would be, like in Iraq’s case, an attack on Iran the country/the nation– in plain language it would be an attack on Iran the people. We cannot as Arabs/Muslims and ultimately as human beings stand on the sideways cheering, or turning a blind (moral) eye to what will sure be happening to the Iranian people. We would have no moral excuse especially after what we know had happened and continues to happen to Iraq and the Iraqi people at the hands of the Anglo-Americans and their collaborators (Sunnis, Shias, Arabs, Kurds, Turks, Persians…alike). And we will not be able to have the pretense then of naiveté to feign ignorance in an effort to assuage our conscience.
We cannot be ‘neutral’ and let “el-foukhar yekasar badoh”= “pottery breaking each other” for we are not talking about “foukhar”= “pottery”, we are talking about human beings, human lives and entire populations that are targeted for devastation and ‘creative chaos”.
We cannot be ‘neutral’ regarding yet another genocidal war against yet another (Muslim) nation and people.
We cannot be ‘neutral’ when we know that white phosphorous, napalm, and depleted uranium will be falling on people and not on ‘Safawis’ and ‘Magoosis’.
We cannot be ‘neutral’ when we know that Iranian women will be raped a la Abu Ghraib.
We cannot be ‘neutral’ when we know that the CIA will be slaughtering Iranians with death squads that will have Arabic faces/collaborators on them just like they are slaughtering Iraqis with death squads that have Iranian faces/collaborators on them.
The Arabic people and their cause is not above separate or distinct from any other people’s cause. It is NOT us “thomma al-toafan”= “us and hell with others”. This is what our common enemy –the masters of divide and conquer are hoping for, each standing alone feeling bitter and betrayed by his own kith and kin/neighbors, revengeful and vindictive at best (from the enemy’s perspective) or apathetic and indifferent at worst when each in their turn are attacked.
The Iraqi people are not above or below the Iranian people, what is good for them is good for the Iranian people and what is bad for them is bad for the Iranian people. If a genocidal destructive campaign was and is wrong against Iraq and its people by the Anglo-Americans under any pretext/excuse , it is wrong for the Iranian people under any pretext/excuse.
An attack on Iran by the racist Anglo-Americans would leave two Muslim countries and peoples ruined, crippled and destroyed, and we cannot with all clear conscience turn our heads in an opposite direction claiming that “it is not our fight”, ignoring all what will happen to the Iranian people based on our knowledge of what has happened and continues to happen to the Iraqi people by the same enemy with the same nature…It is one fight and one humanity against the common enemies of humanity…

An Interview with Professor Daniel McGowan
Angie Tibbs
April 9th, 2007 [was] the fifty-ninth anniversary of the Deir Yassin massacre, the slaughter by Jewish terrorists of civilians in their peaceful little village which lay outside the area that the UN bestowed upon Jews for their possible “state”. It is important that we pause to remember the dead of Deir Yassin, the young, the old, the children, the unborn. It is important that we remember the barbarism that was carried out against essentially defenceless people who were, and had been, living in peace with their Jewish neighbours in Kfar Shaul. That Jews depopulated Deir Yassin by massacre is significant not only because of its inhumanity, but it also marked the beginning of a campaign whereby Jews wiped over 500 Palestinian towns and villages off the map, killed thousands of Palestinian people, and forced close to 800,000 to flee…

One hundred Palestinian Arab families from Assalam (Peace), on the outskirts of occupied Al-Quds, received evacuation orders, and were “given” 14 days to evacuate their homes. The occupation authority claimed that the houses are built on land owned by the heirs of a dead Jewish woman called Rachel Filibine. Eyewitnesses said that tens of policemen, members of what is known as border guards, officers and intelligence men, stormed into the residents’ apartments and handed them evacuation orders signed by the lawyer of the heirs of Rachel, which said that they have evidence that 80% of the land on which buildings are built on is owned by the heirs… If the orders of evacuation are executed, about a thousand Palestinian Arabs shall be made homeless.

Arab Summit and the Carrot of Palestinian State
By Dr. Elias Akleh
The 19th Arab Summit of last Wednesday March 28th, has been used to hang the carrot of establishing a Palestinian state, through the peace initiative, to neutralize Arab opposition against American use of Arab Gulf States as its launching pads for its troops to attack Iran.
Wednesday March 28th had witnessed the nineteenth Arab Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Such summits had been a source of anxiety for the Arab population, since they had been accustomed to see these summits coming out with meaningless patriotic rhetoric reflecting the status quo of Arab political situations, more political concessions to Israel, and more complicity to the hegemonic American policies for a “Greater Middle East” (Greater Israel). This summit has proved to be no different than its predecessors. […]

The United States has quietly poured weapons and military advisers into Ethiopia, whose recent invasion of Somalia opened a new front in the Bush administration’s war on terrorism.
A Christian-led nation in sub-Saharan Africa, surrounded almost entirely by Muslim states, Ethiopia has received… U.S. military aid since late 2002… more than any country in the region except Djibouti….
Last month, thousands of Ethiopian troops invaded neighboring Somalia and helped overturn a fundamentalist Islamic government that the Bush administration said was supported by al-Qaeda.
The U.S. and Ethiopian militaries have “a close working relationship,” Pentagon spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Joe Carpenter said. The ties include intelligence sharing, arms aid and training that gives the Ethiopians “the capacity to defend their borders and intercept terrorists and weapons of mass destruction,” he said.
Somalia has been the region’s primary concern for the U.S. government since the early 1990s…
Ethiopia …is perceived as acting on behalf of the United States, said William Zartman, an Africa expert at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies….

Three months after the United States successfully pressed the United Nations to impose strict sanctions on North Korea because of the country’s nuclear test, Bush administration officials allowed Ethiopia to complete a secret arms purchase from the North, in what appears to be a violation of the restrictions, according to senior American officials.
The United States allowed the arms delivery to go through in January in part because Ethiopia was in the midst of a military offensive against Islamic militias inside Somalia, a campaign that aided the American policy of combating religious extremists in the Horn of Africa […]
Terror War III: U.S. Forces Capture, Render Refugees From Somali “Regime Change”
Chris Floyd, Empire Burlesque
Here’s how George W. Bush treats refugees fleeing from the carnage wrought by his “War on Terror”: he has them captured at gunpoint and “rendered” to torturers in his pay, where they are chained, blindfolded, beaten, stuffed into cages then “disappeared” into secret prisons notorious for their vile abuses. These captures of people trying to escape from the terrors of “regime change,” from the ravages of foreign armies invading their homes, include women and children, as attested by the story of 17-year-old Safia Benaouda, a pregnant Swedish woman who was grabbed – by American troops – as she fled from the bloodbath following the Bush-backed Ethiopian assault on Somalia, AP reports…Read the full article / Leggi l’articolo completo:http://www.uruknet.de/?p=32115

Growing Unrest Posing a Threat to Nigerian Oil
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/21/business/worldbusiness/21oil.html?_r=1&th=&emc=th&pagewanted=print
April 21, 2007
PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria — There are few safe places left for oil companies in the Niger Delta, the epicenter of this country’s petroleum industry. Armed rebel gangs have blown up pipelines, disabled pumping stations, and kidnapped over 150 foreign oil workers in the last year. Companies now confine employees to heavily fortified compounds… The events in Nigeria, the world’s eighth-largest [sixth by most reports] oil exporter, have rippled across energy markets, contributing to higher prices and tighter supplies…[On Friday, gunmen attacked a boat carrying oil workers to an offshore rig in the delta, pushing up oil prices by more than $1.50, to $63.38 a barrel.]
The United States imports more than one million barrels of crude oil from Nigeria every day…
Energy executives blame locals for sabotaging their pipelines either to steal the oil or to gain lucrative cleanup contracts.
By all accounts, petroleum profits have brought huge benefits to this country’s rulers, but few to its people…
Nigeria ranks as one of the most corrupt countries in the world according to Transparency International, a Berlin-based anti-corruption group; 70 percent of the country’s population lives on $1 a day or less. Life expectancy is 47 years…
“Oil companies are caught in an impossible situation,” said Chris Albin-Lackey, a researcher [with George Soros led imperialist NGO] Human Rights Watch. “They cannot meet the expectations of the communities in which they operate. At the same time, you have a government unwilling to do anything about the delta.”…
“The situation here is deplorable,” said John Owubokiri, an advocate for the rights of the delta states in Port Harcourt. “The people are being shortchanged.”
That message is now being delivered in a more forceful way than the largely nonviolent militancy of the past decade. A new group, the [anti-imperialist] Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, has emerged in the past year and claimed responsibility for many of the kidnappings and attacks against oil companies.
MEND wants more money for the delta states and has vowed to bring Nigeria’s oil exports to a stop if its demands are not met.
“We are more than capable of escalating the violence,” the MEND spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, who regularly sends e-mail messages to the media, wrote in response to e-mailed questions. The group, he said, is prepared for “a protracted military confrontation.”…
Algeria Attack and the al-Qaeda Penetration [SIC] of Africa
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
…”al-Qaeda” has a knack of showing up in places targeted by the neocons. For instance, Africa, in particular Somalia and, more recently, Algeria. “Terrorist bomb attacks in Algeria yesterday show al-Qaeda and its allies pose a ‘very real threat’ in North Africa, the U.S. State Department said,” reports Bloomberg. “Al-Qaeda is a ‘current and persistent’ threat in the region, department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters in Washington yesterday…. Islamic militants are becoming more active in North Africa, particularly in the Maghreb region of Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria where they have joined forces with al-Qaeda.”…
Back in February, Defense Secretary Robert “Iran-Contra” Gates “announced the creation of AFRICOM, which will ultimately be responsible for all of Africa except Egypt, which has existing military ties with U.S. Central Command,” according to Stars and Stripes. “AFRICOM’s purpose is to make Africa the primary concern of one combatant command instead of a ’secondary or tertiary’ concern for three other commands.”…
the Washington Institute for Near East Policy was established to expand AIPAC’s control over U.S. foreign policy, as its founding director, Martin Indyk, is the onetime research director of AIPAC, and WINEP’s methodical process of foreign policy colonization began during the Clinton years.
As for Afghanistan, a well-read ninth grader will tell you that’s where “al-Qaeda” was formulated out of selected Mujahideen remnants (i.e., the “Afghan Arabs”), the result of a well-honed collaboration between the CIA and Pakistan’s ISI.
Thus, when the CFR and WINEP tell us “Osama bin Laden provided funding for Algerian Islamists” and “Ayman al-Zawahari … officially approved GSPC’s merger,” we can rest assured this relationship was not engineered in a cave or hovel located somewhere in Pakistan’s wild frontier.
Naturally, the GSPC, teamed up with “al-Qaeda,” is a threat to white people far and wide. “Analysts point to thwarted attacks in France and several arrests of GSPC-linked groups as evidence the group is capable of attacks in Western Europe. Authorities arrested a London-based GSPC militant who conspired to launch a chemical attack, and arrested four members of a GSPC cell in Frankfurt for possession of chemicals and arms,” the CFR warns.
And thus the “al-Qaeda” threat keeps on rolling, out of the Middle East and right into the midst of Africa, where there happens to be no shortage of strategic minerals and such.
Grassroots Lieutenants of Imperialism
Stephen Gowans
Patrick Bond would probably never balk at being accused of contributing to the barrage of negative publicity against the Mugabe government. Bond appears to hate Mugabe with a passion. Nor, I suspect, would he object to anyone pointing out that, where he can, he acts to alienate left support for Mugabe’s government by portraying Mugabe as a reactionary who dishonestly exploits anti-imperialist rhetoric to cling to power at any cost. Bond doesn’t believe Mugabe is engaged in an anti-neo-colonial struggle. He sees Mugabe as nothing more than a corrupt demagogue who has become so addicted to the perks of power that he’ll never give them up willingly…
Zimbabwe and the Politics of Demons and Angels
By Stephen Gowans
http://gowans.wordpress.com/2007/04/15/zimbabwe-and-the-politics-of-demons-and-angels/
The best that can be said about discussions of Zimbabwe, or north Korea, or Sudan, or Iran that reduce to a set of accusations about the demonic character of some leader is that they’re superficial and frivolous. What can also be said is that they’re products of manipulation by forces seeking to manufacture consent for interventions in other countries – interventions that have nothing to do with human rights and democracy and have everything to do with securing advantages for the intervening countries’ corporations, banks and investors. When we dissociate ourselves from “unsavory” regimes – and there’s not one government, Western or otherwise, free from unsavory features that would not allow any of them to be demonized – we isolate really-existing projects for national and class emancipation and thereby undermine the potential for the success of progressive struggles in the real world. It’s true that in behaving in this way we can avoid demonization by association and thereby splatter-proof our own vision – a strategy that may serve the purpose of making our vision more saleable to a skeptical public — but it cannot be safeguarded from vilification forever. The moment it too becomes a threat, it will be vilified as vigorously as all real-world
threats to imperialism are. The idea that you can escape being vilified by those you oppose is true only so long as you don’t oppose them in any kind of serious or effective way. Utopian visions – and those whose left politics amount to nothing more than pious expressions of benevolence and goodwill – are no threat.
What’s more, the view that the success of the independent (which is to say, the US government and ruling class foundation supported) left in Zimbabwe in
toppling the Zanu-PF government is something to be wished for, is naïve or (given the foundation-connections of those who express this view) disingenuous. A successful civil society-executed regime change operation will not produce a decentralized, participatory democracy committed to egalitarianism, but a neo-colonial regime headed by an Anglo-American puppet which will immediately handcuff land reform and abrogate every policy at odds with neo-liberalism and ownership of Zimbabwe’s assets by US and British capital.
The models are Poland and Yugoslavia (among others.) There, trade unions and civil society also managed to enchant the Western left while bringing down
governments that were the only serious obstacle to the installation of comprador regimes — regimes whose agenda was one of shutting down
shipyards, selling off socially and publicly owned enterprises, and ushering in an era of growing inequality and subservience to Western capital. You don’t hear much about these places anymore. You should. They’re what Zimbabwe will become if civil society topples another anti-imperialist government.

Women’s Rights (and Lives) are Being Severely Threatened
The Supreme Court Looks a Lot Like the Taliban
by Heather Gray

April 20, 2007
… back to Monty Python’s film the Meaning of Life where, in jest, “every sperm is sacred” was touted. Indeed, these justices obviously view women as but vessels for sperm and lacking an independent spirit. …with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision this week banning D&E late term abortion without exception to the woman’s health a rock has been struck. We…need to alter the South Africa chant to read:
Now you have touched the women, U.S. Supreme Court and religious right!
You have struck a rock
(You have dislodged a boulder!)
You will be crushed
These are not idle threats as women have always come to the fore to demand, seek, and, in reality, gain rights, though it’s never been easy. We in the west have always struggled against male dominance and repression as well as against religious diatribes that demean us. In the past decades, we have perhaps taken some of our gains for granted, but this Supreme Court decision should send out the clarion call for us all to rally.
Women Under Siege: Abortion Rights and the Roberts Court
http://www.counterpunch.org/fishbein04252007.html
By Leah Fishbein
April 25. 2007
… last Wednesday The Supreme Court contradicted its own 2000 decision to overturn a Nebraska ban on “partial birth abortion” and upheld the federal abortion ban in the cases of Gonzales v. Planned Parenthood and Gonzalez v. Carhart. This hearing occurred in response to the Federal Abortion Ban Act legislation passed by Congress and signed by Bush in 2003. This decision is an appalling one, and it is furthermore an unprecedented setback for women and those who care about them. The Supreme Court has never, in the thirty-plus years since the right to abortion was won in Roe V. Wade, made a decision restricting women’s reproductive rights without providing for cases in which a woman’s health is at stake.
“I consider the Supreme Court Ban on one type of abortion procedure to be an annexation of Women’s Wombs by the U. S Government and as such should be viewed by all people of conscience as an act of war against women.”
-Merle Hoffman, founder, Choices Women’s MedicalCenter, Queens NY, Wednesday, April 18, 2007
“The time is now right to launch aggressive legal challenges across America to abortion on demand. The court has now said it’s OK to ban procedures. We can do more than just put hurdles in front of women seeking abortions; we can put roadblocks in front of them.”
-Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue (in the past leading proponents of violence directed at abortion providers and clinics)
…if there is not massive uprising in the face of this ruling-the Christian Right, c/o the Bush Regime, will move to overturn Roe. V Wade, with the stated goal of federally outlawing abortion as a whole… take a look at any of a number of websites for the National Right to Life Committee, Focus on the Family, Operation Rescue/Save America and this is easily understood.
Blatantly missing from this whole debate, from the media coverage and the demands of the Christian fundamentalists and the wobbly [note: SILENT & COMPLICIT] democrats’ opinions and public opinion in general, is the science … understanding why the procedure banned in yesterday’s decision should never have been up for question at all… the origins of this term “partial birth” in light of the ban… the very people attempting to outlaw abortion invented this non-medical term, one not even acknowledged by the scientific community, to scare people into railing against this process (really called D&X, or Dilation and Extraction). Coined by the National Right to Life Committee in 1995 with the hopes that “as the public learns what a ‘partial-birth abortion’ is, they might also learn something about other abortion methods, and that this would foster a growing opposition to abortion,” the term was quickly introduced in the title of republican-sponsored legislation to ban the new procedure developed by an Ohio-based physician. The alternate process commonly utilized after the 20th week of a pregnancy, dilation and evacuation, performs the necessary dismemberment of the fetus inside the womb, often causing severe blood loss and also possibly gashing the cervix which can easily prevent any future possibility for pregnancy-in effect, sterilization. Likewise, in the event of an attempted c-section in place of other methods there is a high risk of infection…
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists indicates that in certain circumstances, the D&X procedure is the best one for a women’s health…. The American Medical Association bylaws actually explicitly prevent physicians from performing this procedure unless the patient’s health is at risk….
The Alan Guttmacher Institute research group found that in 2000, around 15,000 abortions were performed on women 20 weeks or more along in their pregnancies-those abortions overwhelmingly occurring between the 20th and 24th week. Of those 15,000, only about 2,200 D&X procedures were performed–0.2 percent of the 1.3 million abortions believed to be performed that year. These procedures are almost never performed after fetal viability, this being so rare that the “pro-life” movement actually panicked when Congress originally attempted to ban D&Xs only in cases of fetal viability-according to the “pro-life” movement, this ban wouldn’t even be effective with that stipulation because those cases hardly exist. This is why this ruling is much more political propaganda rather than a genuine move for “life.”
Many D&X abortions occur because of a fetal condition called hydrocephalus–which 1 in 2000 fetuses develop–in which the cranium is abnormally enlarged up to 20″ (compared to a normal adult diameter of 7-8″), making delivery dangerous, extremely painful and even fatal for both the fetus (especially in a caesarean section) and the mother. Hydrocephalus is hard to detect before or even early in the second trimester-hence a major part of the justification for the legality of this procedure. Aside from all of this, it is necessary to understand that setting the precedent for this exclusion of the patient-the woman-from the patient-physician relationship is a major violation of human rights and women’s rights. We should have this information, and be confident in a scientific justification for this procedure, but we must also push forward with an understanding of the plans of the Christian Right for women and society and a firm belief in the autonomous power women must hold over their own bodies and futures in order to have justice, real human dignity and a future in which all are really equal. Any encroachments on this autonomy equal a negation of the basic principles it rests on-the equality of women… the right of women to any kind of future they might choose, and the inherent human value of half the world’s population….
… this ban will disproportionately affect working class people and people of color who already have limited access to family planning services and are less likely to be able to abort early or prevent pregnancy with contraceptives…. this means unsafe, back-alley abortions… the reactionary extremist legislation being proposed and even passed all over on a state level (death certificates for aborted fetuses; public record of abortion patients–women’s names and information; parental notification, etc…), the ‘pregnancy crisis centers’ being funded by our tax money, abstinence only education being funded, the churches being funded to wage war on women’s rights…
In the war on women, this is their Sand Creek Massacre, and if we don’t revolt because of this, they will be able to push the rest of this whole program forward …

Commentary: national oppression is the material and ideological foundation of U.S. capitalist imperialism:
The Imus incident is most revealing as an example of how capitalism and its media twist pervert anti-racist outrage into a racist attack to deepen national oppression and racism by blaming Blacks and Black culture, in particular commercial ‘hiphop’ in its vile capitalist promoted incarnation as a pretext to suppress hiphop’s truly subversive –and suppressed–anti-capitalist-racist-sexist political nature…with the help of liberal pontificators like the following:
Don Imus Isn’t Joking: “Shock Jocks” as Propagandists for Privilege
by Lydia Howell
What Don Imus did isn’t unusual. Shock jocks, national and local, habitually make racist remarks and sexually humiliating comments about women — as “jokes”. I always wonder why these guys are so oblivious to minimal standards of courtesy. Is it that they really think that only white men, like themselves, deserve basic respect? Or, is it that making degrading comments about people of color and women is their attempt to “put THOSE people BACK in their place”? As a woman, I’m absolutely clear that when men talk about women in disgusting ways, it communicates not only hostility, but also has another message: “You think you’re equal — but, you’re still just p–sy.” Even today, some long for the old hierarchy, where white men were privileged in every situation. Now, they have to share the field with the rest of us. Some point out that African-Americans use the ‘N-word” and “ho” is hip hop vernacular — as if that gets Imus off the hook. It doesn’t…..
No matter who says these ugly words, what’s being reinforced is racism and sexism.
Of course, no women deserve such treatment, but, that Imus attacked accomplished young African-American women at an Ivy league college is especially troubling. That Black hip-hop artists do the same thing provides convenient “cover” for Imus and other white men. But, hip-hop artists didn’t create the N-word and whites used it long before rap. The same goes for sexist slurs, once whispered and now blaring from every corner of pop culture.
One positive result of this public furor is that musicians should contemplate their frivolous use of a word said every time a Black person has been lynched in this country. It’s long overdue to challenge the relentless sexual disrespect all women are subjected to in what some have termed the “pornification” of American culture. …(full article

Americans on the “Fenceline” Have No Defense: People of Color More Concentrated Near Hazardous Waste Facilities Than Twenty Years Ago
by Robert D. Bullard
Recycling events, neighborhood cleanups, awareness festivals, lectures series, and other activities are slated throughout the nation to mark the 37th anniversary of Earth Day April 22. While there is much to celebrate, there is also good reason to raise the red flag that all is not well in America. This is especially true for the physical environments where people of color live, work, play, worship, and attend school. Let us all celebrate Earth Day 2007, but let’s not forget that there is still much work to be done to ensure that the environment of all Americans is protected — without regard to race, ethnicity, income, or the ability of individuals to hire lawyers, technical experts, and “vote with their feet” to escape unhealthy environments. Some communities have the wrong complexion for protection.

Corporate Media Focuses On Wolfowitz’s Girlfriend, Not his World-Class War Crimes
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire,http://kurtnimmo.com/?p=829
Leave it to the corporate media to make a big deal out of Paul Wolfowitz’s shameless promotion of his girlfriend, Shaha Riza, while ignoring the larger story—the fait accompli fusion of neoliberal and neocon policies at the World Bank and the IMF…
“The neolib-neocon fusion is personified by Wolfowitz, close ally of the exceptionally corrupt, brutal Indonesian dictator Suharto during the 1980s and more recently, as deputy Pentagon leader, architect of and apologist for imperial theft and US corporate patronage associated with the illegal Iraq War,” writes Patrick Bond…
appointing the warmonger Wolfowitz to head up the World Bank was a studied choice—sort of like appointing a wolf to watch over a chicken coop—as the “relationship between globalization and militarism,” as Gwyn Kirk and Margo Okazawa-Rey [http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Global_Economy/Neoliberalism,_Militarism.html] note, “should be seen as two sides of the same coin. On one side, globalization promotes the conditions that lead to unrest, inequality, conflict, and, ultimately, war. On the other side, globalization fuels the means to wage war by protecting and promoting the military industries needed to produce sophisticated weaponry. This weaponry, in turn, is used or is threatened to be used to protect the investments of transnational corporations and their shareholders.”
According to the UK Telegraph, the “affair is particularly embarrassing for Mr. Wolfowitz as one of his key campaigns at the World Bank has been to root out corruption and poor governance in developing countries.”
Obviously, the editors and careerist scriveners over at the Telegraph are simply doing their job…obfuscating the truth at the behest of the neolibs… because the real job of the World Bank … and the IMF is to impose “austerity measures, “structural adjustment,” and “macroeconomic reform” on poor nations, that is to say easy marks for predators.

A Momentary Glimpse into Daily Life in Iraq: Massacre at Va Tech
SHERWOOD ROSS, CounterPunch
At the memorial ceremony for those slain at Virginia Tech, President Bush said he did not know what the victims had done to deserve their fate. How this nation wept as one when thirty Americans perished and twenty more were wounded! There is almost nothing else on the television news— not even news from the ongoing [U.S.] slaughter from the war in Iraq…here we have the spectacle of the man in the White House who made the war on Iraq, where a disaster comparable to the Virginia Tech massacre occurs four or five times a day every day, leading the nation in prayer…
From an Iraqi friend:
What happened to the world .. while Virginian Tech massacre and the story of the holocaust survivor who saved the students are covering the news, Iraqi Tech is a forgotten case.. I guess we have the right to call Iraqi.. Iraq Tech, don’t we..
Just today 200 Iraqi were dead.. where is the media.. is the American blood different from ours.. is their students have dreams and ours don’t.. is their youth deserve to be remembered and our youth wont.. what happened to the world Les.. what happend..
Abeer was a 14 year old girl who lived in a small village. Abeer was raped, killed and burned by American troops. Abeer’s parent and her younger sister were shot and killed in their home before raping her.. what is the difference between Abeer and any student of Viginian Tech.. .
Ali lost both his arms in a coalition attack on Baghdad early in the Gulf War in which his parents and many members of his family died…
Who will remember Abeer, who will remember Ali Les.. who will remember the daily killing, the migration of the Iraqis, the destruction of our country and the continous humiliation.. who will remember us, could you please tell me who..
I wrote to an American friend few days ago and told him: ” they killed the good feelings inside us - we don’t feel for them as they don’t feel for us”. I don’t feel for them any more and I don’t feel guilty about it…
Wish you well..

There was mass murder committed today.
Insane meaningless indiscriminate killing of
defenseless innocent people.
Blood everywhere, bodies and lives torn apart.
Horrific screams from the victims, the witnesses and
the next of kin.
Indefensible inhuman and pitiless mass murder.
I am talking of course, about Iraq.
Where murder is a daily fact of life, and where the
madman is not a
sick kid, but a cadre of suit-wearing
psychopaths.
Thirty-odd people murdered in Blacksburg Virginia
today, and the
country is in mass mourning.
The President is shattered, the media people are
unnerved, school
administrators, professors, and students, clergy, all
of them shocked and
distraught…
But this makes for a relatively peaceful day in Iraq -
when only 30 odd
bodies are dragged away, the wounded in a desperate
run to the closest
emergency care.
This is a day at the beach in Baghdad, or Fallujah, or
Ramadi, or Anbar
province.
Every day is Blacksburg in Iraq. And much much worse.
Can you even begin to imagine a life when every day
means bombs and
corpses, scattered severed heads and limbs, multiple
rapes, tortures and
beatings ?
Every day.
Every.
Day.
Well, give it a thought.
We are paying for it. And-
We know who the perpetrators are, We know that
they have killed
and will kill again.
Yet, We are letting it go on.
Yet, We have stopped nothing, changed nothing.
Here are just 2 photos of our mass murders in Iraq.
Just so we can
admire the product of our complicity, our tax dollars,
and the future tax
dollars of generations of us yet to be born.
If this is OK with you, then do nothing.
They are counting on it.

The expansion of the Surveillance State is endless. Buried within an ABC report on the Virginia Tech shootings is this paragraph:
Some news accounts have suggested that Cho had a history of antidepressant use, but senior federal officials tell ABC News that they can find no record of such medication in the government’s files. This does not completely rule out prescription drug use, including samples from a physician, drugs obtained through illegal Internet sources, or a gap in the federal database, but the sources say theirs is a reasonably complete search.
Is there any good reason whatsoever why the federal government should be maintaining “files” which contain information about the pharmaceutical products which all Americans are consuming? […]
Title: “Forcing Kids Into a Mental Health Ghetto”
Congressman Ron Paul
http://www.truthnews.net/world/2004090078.htm
Faculty Evaluator: David Van Nuys Ph.D.
Student Researchers: John Ferritto, Matt Johnson
In April of 2002, President Bush appointed a 22 member commission called the President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health in order to “identify policies that could be implemented by Federal, State and local governments to maximize the utility of existing resources, improve coordination of treatments and services, and promote successful community integration for adults with a serious mental illness and children with a serious emotional disturbance.”1 Members of this commission include physicians in the mental health field and at least one (Robert N. Postlethwait) former employee of pharmaceutical giant Ely Lilly and Co.
In July of 2003 the commission published the results of their study. They found that mental health disorders often go undiagnosed and recommended to the President that there should be more comprehensive screening for mental illnesses for people of all ages, including pre-school age children. In accordance with their findings, the commission recommended that schools were in a “key position” to screen the 52 million students and 6 million adult employees of our nation’s schools.2
The commission also recommended linking the screenings with treatment and support. They recommended using the Texas Medication Algorithm Project (TMAP) as a model treatment system.3 TMAP, which was implemented in Texas’ publicly funded mental health care system while George W. Bush was governor of Texas,4 is a disease management program that aids physicians in prescribing drugs to patients based on clinical history, background, symptoms, and previous results. It was the first program in the United States aimed at establishing medication guidelines for treating mental health illnesses.5 Basically, it is an algorithm that recommends specific drugs which should be used to treat specific diseases. Funding for TMAP was provided by a Robert Wood-Johnson Grant as well as several major drug companies. The project began in 1995 as an alliance of individuals from pharmaceutical companies, the University of Texas, and the mental health and corrections systems of Texas.6 …
In November of 2004, Congress appropriated $20 million8 to implement the findings of the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health. This would include mandatory screening by schools for mental health illnesses. Congressman Ron Paul, R-Texas introduced an amendment to the appropriations bills which would withhold funding for mandatory mental health screenings and require parental consent and notification. His amendment, however, was voted down by a wide margin (95-315 in the House of Representatives).9 Paul, a doctor and long-time member of the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) states, “At issue is the fundamental right of parents to decide what medical treatment is appropriate for their children. The notion of federal bureaucrats ordering potentially millions of youngsters to take psychotropic drugs like Ritalin strikes an emotional chord with American parents.” Paul says the allegation “that we have a nation of children with undiagnosed mental disorders crying out for treatment is patently false,” and warns that mental health screening could be used to label children whose attitudes, religious beliefs, and political views conflict with established doctrine. Paul further warns that an obvious major beneficiary of this legislation is the pharmaceutical industry. The AAPS has decried this legislation, which they say will lead to mandatory psychological testing of every child in America without parental consent, and “heap even more coercive pressure on parents to medicate children with potentially dangerous side effects.” […]

The prisoner was forced to wear photographs of “sexy females”and to study sets of such photographs to identify whether various pictures of bikini-clad women were of the same or a different person. He was told that his mother and sister were whores. He was forced to wear a bra, and a woman’s thong was put on his head. He was dressed as a woman and compelled to dance with a male interrogator. He was told that he had homosexual tendencies and that other prisoners knew this. Although continuously monitored, interrogators repeatedly strip-searched him as a “control measure.” On at least one occasion, he was forced to stand naked with women soldiers present. Female interrogators seductively touched the prisoner under the authorized use of approaches called “Invasion of Personal Space”and “Futility…:http://www.uruknet.de/?p=32134

Military eyes threat from climate change
* The U.S. Army War College last month funded a two-day conference titled “The National Security Implications of Global Climate Change.” And 11 retired senior generals on Monday will release a report saying global warming “presents significant national-security challenges to the United States,” which it must address or face serious consequences…
The 63-page report — to be released a day before the U.N. Security Council holds its first briefing on climate change — lays out a detailed case for how global warming could destabilize vulnerable states in Africa and Asia and drive a flood of migrants to richer countries. It focuses on how climate change “can act as a threat multiplier for instability in some of the most volatile regions of the world,” in part by causing water and food shortages.
The study notes that conflicts in regions such as Darfur and Somalia stemmed initially from a lack of resources, something that will worsen with global warming. Climate change is different from traditional military threats, report author Vice Adm. Richard Truly said. “It’s going to happen to every country and every person in the whole world at the same time,” he said. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/PrintStory.pl?document_id=2003667112&zsection_id=2002107549&slug=milchange15&date=20070415

A coalition of opposition groups organized the “Dissenters March” to protest the economic and social policies of Putin as well as a series of Kremlin actions that critics say has stripped Russians of many political rights. Organizers said only about 2,000 demonstrators turned out.
Thousands of police officers massed to keep the demonstrators off landmark Pushkin Square in downtown Moscow, beating some and detaining many others, including Garry Kasparov, the former world chess champion who has emerged as the most prominent leader of the opposition alliance… Kasparov, who witnesses said was seized as he tried to lead a small group of demonstrators through lines of police ringing Pushkin Square, was freed late Saturday after he was fined $38.

USA admits it interferes into Russia’s internal affairs
http://english.pravda.ru/russia/politics/12-04-2007/89647-usa-russia-0
According to the US State Department, the USA has been rendering technical and financial assistance to support civil community groups and non-governmental organizations, etc to support their active participation in social life.
The report basically states that the power in Russia [this from U.S!] is concentrated in the hands of executive authorities only, which manipulate the legislative agencies and show pressure on the legal system and opposition political parties. Furthermore, the US State Department accused the Russian security forces of creating considerable problems in the field of human rights. US officials believe that the Russian government is involved in political kidnappings and killings in the Republic of Chechnya and other territories of the Northern Caucasus….
The Russian deputies were infuriated with the fact that the USA virtually acknowledged the fact that it funded specific events connected with the forthcoming presidential and parliamentary elections. It is worthy of note that Russian President Putin stands strongly against it.
The report generally testifies to USA’s intention to participate in the Russian election process, which means that the United States is determined to interfere in Russia’s internal affairs.

JAMA Article Sparks New Round of HRT Infatuation
by Martha Rosenberg
It wasn’t a new study and it didn’t reverse the Women’s Health Initiative findings. It was a reanalysis of an existing study and it tweaked the Women’s Health Initiative findings. But that didn’t stop medical reporters from a new round of gee whiz journalism about HRT following an article in the April 4 Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The article, “Postmenopausal Hormone Therapy and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease by Age and Years Since Menopause,” found that HRT only causes stroke and breast cancer in women under 59 — not stroke, breast cancer and heart attack. HRT still causes stroke, breast cancer and heart attack in women over 59. And blood clots, lung cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer, gall bladder cancer, endometrial cancer, lupus, asthma, scleroderma, hearing loss, dementia and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in all ages according to other reports. But overnight headlines like, “New Study Clears Use of Hormones for Women in Their 50s,” “Review study reverses 2002 caution against HRT,” and even, “HRT reduces the risk of heart disease,” appeared……( full article

ATLANTA — Research on two continents signaled more bad news for menopause hormones, offering the strongest evidence yet that they can raise the risk of breast cancer and are tied to a slightly higher risk of ovarian cancer….a study of nearly 1 million women in the United Kingdom showed that those who took hormones after menopause were 20 percent more likely to develop ovarian cancer or die from it than women who never took the pills. That study was published online by the London-based journal The Lancet…

Tell everyone … professionals, alternative practitioners, nutrient and herb companies, everyone! Let them know how important their participation is to make sure the FDA backs off from this repressive course.

The Anti-Empire Report

Land of the free, home of the War on Terrorism…” is terrorism.”
“They told us this was one of the world’s worst terrorists, and he got the sentence of a drunken driver,” said Ben Wizner, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, referring to David Hicks, a 31-year-old Australian who in a plea bargain with a US military court will serve nine months in prison, largely in Australia. That’s after five years at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba without being charged with a crime, without a trial, without a conviction. Under the deal, Hicks agreed not to talk to reporters for one year (a slap in the face of free speech), to forever waive any profit from telling his story (a slap — mon Dieu! — in the face of free enterprise), to submit to US interrogation and testify at future US trials or international tribunals (an open invitation to the US government to hound the young man for the rest of his life), to renounce any claims of mistreatment or unlawful detention (a requirement which would be unconstitutional in a civilian US court). “If the United States were not ashamed of its conduct, it wouldn’t hide behind a gag order,” said Wizner.)[1]
Like so many other “terrorists” held by the United States in recent years, Hicks had been “sold” to the American military for a bounty offered by the US, a phenomenon repeated frequently in Afghanistan and Pakistan. US officials had to know that once they offered payments to a very poor area to turn in bodies that almost anyone was fair game.
Other “terrorists” have been turned in as reprisals for all sorts of personal hatreds and feuds.
Many others — abroad and in the United States — have been incarcerated by the United States simply for working for, or merely contributing money to, charitable organizations with alleged or real ties to a “terrorist organization”, as determined by a list kept by the State Department, a list conspicuously political.
It was recently disclosed that an Iraqi resident of Britain is being released from Guantánamo after four years. His crime? He refused to work as an informer for the CIA and MI5, the British security service. His business partner is still being held in Guantánamo, for the same crime.[2]
Finally, there are those many other poor souls who have been picked up simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. “Most of these guys weren’t fighting. They were running,” General Martin Lucenti, former deputy commander of Guantánamo, has pointed out.[3]…
The United States has insisted on calling such camps “terrorist training camps”, or “anti-American terrorist training camps”, or “al-Qaeda terrorist training camps”. Almost every individual or group not in love with US foreign policy, which Washington wants to stigmatize, is charged with being associated with, or being a member of, al Qaeda, as if there’s a precise and meaningful distinction between people retaliating against American imperialism while being a member of al Qaeda and retaliating against American imperialism while NOT being a member of al Qaeda; as if al Qaeda gives out membership cards to fit into your wallet, as if there are chapters of al Qaeda that put out a weekly newsletter and hold a potluck on the first Monday of each month.
It should be noted that for nearly half a century much of southern Florida has been one big training camp for anti-Castro terrorists. None of their groups — which have carried out many hundreds of serious terrorist acts in the US as well as abroad, including bombing a passenger airplane in flight — are on the State Department list. Nor were the Contras of Nicaragua in the 1980s, heavily supported by the United States, about whom former CIA Director Stansfield Turner testified: “I believe it is irrefutable that a number of the Contras’ actions have to be characterized as terrorism, as State-supported terrorism.”[5] The same applies to groups in Kosovo and Bosnia, with close ties to al Qaeda, including Osama bin Laden, in the recent past, but which have allied themselves with Washington’s agenda in the former Yugoslavia since the 1990s. Now we learn of US support for a Pakistani group, called Jundullah and led by a Taliban, which has taken responsibility for the recent kidnapings and deaths and of more than a dozen Iranian soldiers and officials in cross-border attacks.[6] Do not hold your breath waiting for the name Jundallah to appear on the State Department list of terrorist organizations; nor any of the several other ethnic militias being supported by the CIA to carry out terrorist bombing and assassination attacks in Iran.[7]
The same political selectivity applies to many of the groups which are on the list, particularly those opposed to American or Israeli policies…
Australian/British journalist John Pilger has noted that in George Orwell’s 1984 “three slogans dominate society: war is peace, freedom is slavery and ignorance is strength. Today’s slogan, war on terrorism, also reverses meaning. The war is terrorism.” (emphasis added)
Throwing the earth on the mercy of the market
Al Gore appeared before a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on global warming on March 21. The star of “An Inconvenient Truth” was told by Cong. Joe Barton of Texas: “You’re not just off a little — you’re totally wrong.” In the afternoon Gore testified before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, during which the former vice president was told by Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma: “You’ve been so extreme in some of your expressions that you’re losing some of your own people.”[11]
These members of Congress know the facts of economic life in the United States. Fighting global warming is a threat to the principal human generator of it — corporations — who avail themselves of the best congress members money can buy to keep government regulations as weak as can be.
Does Al Gore know the same facts of American economic life? Of course, but you would have a hard time discerning that from his film. It’s as cowardly in dealing with the corporations as Gore was in fighting the theft of the 2000 election. In the film’s hour and a half, the words “corporations” or “profit” are not heard… the film’s message is that it’s up to the individual to change his habits, to campaign for renewable energy, and to write his congress member about this or that. In summary, the basic problem, he tells us, is that we’re lacking “political will”…. Gore was vice-president for eight years in a position to pressure the corporations to mend their ways and Congress to enact tougher regulations; as well as to educate the public on more than their own bad habits. But what exactly did he do? ..

Bill McKibben, Step it Up!
by Joshua Frank
[Earth Day] Organizers will be asking for an 80% reduction by the middle of the century in hopes of curbing the effects of global warming. The actions, led by celebrated author Bill McKibben and his team, want our government to Step it Up! — which is what they are calling the day’s festivities. Is McKibben even calling for the right kind of measures?
I don’t think our culture of exploitation, whether of natural resources or human bodies, is in any way “civilized”. Quite the opposite. We are a civilization of corporate and individual greed, and an 80% reduction, while a positive step forward, is hardly the answer. I wish McKibben and his cohorts had the guts to call out the 800-pound gorilla in the corner of the room that so few are willing to talk about: Capitalism.
I’ll give the last word to the great Edward Abbey, who, peering out over the monstrous Glen Canyon Dam in the Spring of 1981, had this to say to the crowd that had amassed:
“The domination of nature leads to the domination of human beings. Meanwhile, what to do . . . Oppose the destruction of our homeland by these alien forces from Houston, Tokyo, Manhattan, Washington DC, and the Pentagon. And if opposition is not enough, we must resist. And if resistance is not enough, than subvert. After ten years of modest environmental progress, the powers of industrialism and militarism have become alarmed. The Empire is striking back, though we must continue to strike back at the Empire by whatever means available to us. Win or lose, it is a matter of honor. Oppose, resist, subvert, delay, until the Empire itself begins to fall apart.” (full article
“We have about 60 per cent of the world’s wealth but only 6.3 per
cent of its population. In this situation we cannot fail to be the object of
envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a
pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of
disparity. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury
of altruism and world benefaction. We should cease to talk about such vague
and unreal objectives as human rights, the raising of living standards and
democratisation. The day is not far off when we are going to have to deal in
straight power concepts. The less we are then hampered by idealistic
slogans, the better.”
George Kennan, ex-US State Department Policy Planning Staff Chief, Document PPS23, 24 February 1948
WHO ARE THE REAL TERRORISTS?
“From 1945 to 2003, the United States attempted to overthrow more than 40 foreign governments, and to crush more than 30 populist-nationalist movements fighting against intolerable regimes. In the process, the US bombed some 25 countries, caused the end of life for several million people, and condemned many millions more to a life of agony and despair.”

Video: How 6 million People Were killed in CIA secret wars against third world countries
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article4068.htm
The secret wars of the CIA [against the “Third World”]
”We have massive documentations of what they call the secret wars of the CIA, we do not have to guess or speculate. We had the Church committee investigate them in 1975 gave us our first really in depth powerful look inside their structures. Senator Church said in the 14 years he did his investigation that he found that he had run 900 major operations, and 3000 minor operations and if you extrapolate that over the whole period of the forty odd years we’ve had a CIA you come up with 3000 major operations and over 10000 minor operations. Everyone of them illegal, everyone of them disruptive of the lives and societies of other peoples and many are bloody and gory beyond comprehension almost.
Extensively we manipulated and organized the overthrow of functioning constitutional democracies in other countries.
We organized secret armies and directed them to fight in just about every country in the world.
We encouraged ethnic minorities to rise up and fight…like the Kurds in the middle east….And of course we organized and still do and fund death squads in countries around the world like…in El-Salvador…
I am trying to summarize this ‘third world war’ that the CIA, the US national security complex with the military…
Let me just put it this way…we counted at least, minimum figure 6 million people who have been killed in this long 40 year war that we waged
against the peoples of the third world.
They are not Soviets…they are not British, French, Swedes, Swiss, Belgiums.
We do not do bloody gory ‘operations’ in the countries of Europe. These are all people of the third world.
People of countries like the Congo, Vietnam, Indonesia, Nicaragua…where conspicuously they nor their governments do not have the capabilities of doing any physical hurt to the US…Cheap shots if you will, killing people of other countries of the world who cannot defend themselves…”
John Stockwell, former CIA Station Chief in Angola.
